There’s something magical about opening a bottle of wine. The subtle pop of a cork, the gentle swirl in your glass, and that first sip of something exquisite can transport you to vineyards kissed by the sun and soil steeped in tradition. Whether it’s a sparkling toast shared with friends or a bold red savored in solitude, the right wine tells a story.

But it’s not just about opening any bottle—it must be good quality wine. The delicate aromas, intricate layers of flavor, and the way it complements a meal or a moment all contribute to an exceptional experience. In a world filled with endless choices, there’s something special about selecting a wine that has been celebrated for its excellence. After all, life is too short for anything less than great wine.

When we talk about great wine, it’s only natural to pay homage to Italy, the cradle of wine-making, where tradition and innovation intertwine to produce some of the world’s finest bottles.

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending the Vini d’Italia 2025 Special Awards Dinner at the stunning Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Hotel in Rome, where I experienced firsthand some of the most exceptional wines the country has to offer. It was a celebration of Italy’s proud wine making heritage and a showcase of the meticulous craftsmanship that goes into each bottle. Chef Heros De Agostinis, Executive Chef of Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Hotel in Rome, curated an extraordinary menu paired with the award-winning wines of the Special Awards recipients.

During the evening, several special awards were given out, but what truly caught my attention were five wines recognized for their excellence at the prestigious Vini d’Italia 2025 Gala Awards. These wines took home top honors in the Special Awards category, spanning sparkling, red, white, rosé, and dessert varieties. Each has been celebrated for its exceptional quality, craftsmanship, and ability to elevate any occasion. The Vini d’Italia guide by Gambero Rosso is now in its 38th edition. This year alone, they sampled nearly 50,000.

Here are five exceptional wines, each crowned with a prestigious award and paired with dishes that will make every sip even more memorable.

1. OP Pinot Nero M. Cl. Pas Dosé Poggio dei Duca ’19 – Calatroni

Award: Sparkling Wine of the Year 2025
Sparkling Wine with Character

This sparkling Pinot Nero, hailing from the Oltrepò Pavese region, offers a sophisticated and lively drinking experience. Expect bursts of red fruit, hints of balsamic notes, and a vibrant, refreshing finish. Its fine bubbles and complexity make it a great option for celebrations, while its mineral-driven backbone means it will continue to evolve over time. Sourced from a high-altitude single vineyard in Rocca de’ Giorgi, it’s perfect for those looking for a refined sparkling wine that’s anything but ordinary.

Food Pairings suggestions:

  • Oysters: The wine’s minerality and bubbles make it perfect for pairing with fresh oysters or other shellfish.
  • Smoked Salmon: Its elegant texture complements the rich, slightly salty flavor of smoked fish.

2. Alto Adige Sauvignon Gran Lafóa Ris. ’21 – Colterenzio

Award: White Wine of the Year 2025
A Powerful and Elegant White Wine

For those seeking bold flavors with a touch of elegance, this Sauvignon Blanc from Alto Adige is a standout. The Gran Lafóa Riserva 2021 showcases intense tropical fruit and citrus aromas, balanced with minerality and a crisp finish. Grown in a vineyard that has become synonymous with high-quality white wines, this bottle is perfect for food pairings, particularly with seafood or creamy dishes. Its combination of power and grace makes it an excellent choice for both casual and formal settings.

Food pairings suggestions:

  Asparagus Risotto: The herbal and earthy flavors of asparagus pair well with the crisp, fruity nature of the wine, while the creaminess of the risotto adds depth.

  Sushi with Avocado: The wine’s tropical flavors complement the creamy richness of avocado, especially in sushi rolls.

3. RGC Valtènesi Chiaretto Antitesi ’23 – Avanzi

Award: Rosé Wine of the Year 2025
A New Wave of Rosé You Need to Experience

The rosé revolution in Italy is here, and the Antitesi Chiaretto ’23 from Valtènesi is leading the charge. This delicate yet complex rosé is made from the Groppello grape, offering a fresh and vibrant profile with notes of berries, flowers, and a distinctive mineral edge. What sets it apart is its balance of drinkability with surprising aging potential—something you don’t often find in rosé wines. Whether enjoyed immediately or after some time in the cellar, it promises a dynamic tasting experience.

Food pairings suggestions:

  Grilled Vegetables: The wine’s freshness complements grilled vegetables like zucchini, peppers, and eggplant, seasoned with olive oil and herbs.

  Seafood Pasta: A light pasta dish with shrimp or clams in a garlic and olive oil sauce will pair well with the wine’s vibrant acidity and subtle fruitiness.

4. Chianti Colli Fiorentini Molino degli Innocenti Ris. ’19 – Torre a Cona

Award: Red Wine of the Year 2025
The Quintessential Red for Lovers of Italian Wines

Few wines evoke the spirit of Italy quite like Chianti, and the Molino degli Innocenti Riserva ’19 is a perfect example of why. This red wine is rich with flavors of cherry, plum, and spice, balanced by a vibrant acidity that makes it incredibly versatile. Produced in the Colli Fiorentini region, this Chianti showcases all the elegance and structure of a classic Italian red, with fine tannins and a long, smooth finish. Whether paired with a hearty Italian meal or enjoyed on its own, it’s a wine that promises to impress.

Food pairing suggestions:

Bistecca alla Fiorentina: A traditional Tuscan steak with rosemary and olive oil pairs perfectly with the wine’s structure and acidity, cutting through the richness of the meat.

Mushroom Risotto: Earthy mushrooms and the wine’s bright, red-fruited character are a match made in heaven, with the acidity cutting through the richness of the dish.

5. Moscato Passito al Governo di Saracena ’15 – Feudo dei Sanseverino

Award: Meditation Wine of the Year 2025
A Sweet Wine for Savoring Slow Moments

For those who appreciate the art of dessert wines, the Moscato Passito al Governo di Saracena ’15 is a wine you must experience. This Calabrian sweet wine is all about richness and depth, offering a symphony of flavors ranging from honey and dried fruit to caramel and spices. Each sip reveals new layers, making it a perfect after-dinner treat or a wine to enjoy during quiet, contemplative moments. Its complexity makes it a “meditation wine,” one to be savored slowly.

Food pairing suggestions:

  Poached Pears: The caramelized sweetness of poached pears with vanilla or spices mirrors the rich fruit and honeyed notes of the wine.

  Chocolate Tart: The deep, rich flavors of a dark chocolate tart will be perfectly offset by the sweet, fruity nuances of the Moscato.

Each wine is crafted to elevate any occasion, showcasing its distinct personality and charm. Whether you’re sharing a bottle with friends or indulging in a quiet evening alone, these are the wines you need to be drinking—because good wine is not just a luxury, it’s an experience everyone deserves.
