Abolish Senate, drastically slash MCA slots – Makau Mutua

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 29 – Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Spokesperson Makau Mutua has closed ranks with Former Attorney General Githu Muigai on restructuring the current representation structure by reducing the devolved units and constituencies.

On his X handle, Mutua supported the submission made by the Former Attorney General before the National Dialogue Committee co-chaired by Azimio Coalition Principal Kalonzo Musyoka and Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwah.

The Azimio La Umoja Coalition Spokesperson stated Kenyans are currently overburdened due to over representation which has increased the wage bill.

Mutua proposed abolishing the Senate and slashing the constituencies from 290 to 200.

“Prof Githu Muigai is RIGHT — Kenyans are over-represented and overburdened by their representatives. Let’s ABOLISH the Senate, SHRINK the National Assembly to under 200, AMALGAMATE counties, and DRASTICALLY cut the number of MCAs,” he stated.

Muigai has proposed that the current 290 constituencies and 47 counties be reduced to a maximum of 100 and 14 respectively.

Githu suggested reducing the constituencies to approximately 100, each represented by one man and one woman to achieve the two-third gender rule.

“We have too many constituencies and counties. We should be reducing them not increasing them. They are costing us a lot of money and quite a number of them are not viable,” Muigai said.

He added: “Any amendment of the Constitution should see the reduction of counties. Bring more counties together so that they can mobilize resources together and share them.”
