Barbados celebrates its Independence Day on November 30th each year. This day holds significant historical and cultural importance for the country as it marks its independence from British colonial rule. On November 30, 1966, Barbados officially gained independence, and since then, the island nation has celebrated this occasion annually.
On Thursday, 30th November 2023, Barbados’ High Commissioner to the Republic of Kenya and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Nairobi, His Excellency Alexander W McDonald, hosted a distinguished gathering of esteemed guests, marking the joyous occasion of 57th Anniversary of Independence of Barbados. The air was filled with anticipation as diplomats, dignitaries, and friends of Barbados stepped into the gracefully adorned venue, Lake House in Tigoni, a tranquil grounds surrounded by nature and the scenic beauty of the Tigoni highlands. The manicured lawns were transformed into a picturesque setting, with elegant decorations creating an atmosphere of refined celebration.
Under the distinguished leadership of High Commissioner McDonald, the event promised not only a celebration of Barbados’ rich heritage but also an exchange of cultural nuances between the Caribbean gem and the warm embrace of Kenya. Against the backdrop of diplomatic decorum and the vibrant hues of the Barbadian flag, the High Commissioner together with his wife and children, extended a warm greeting to all attendees, fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie and shared celebration.
The CARICOM diplomatic mission in Nairobi, Kenya, was commissioned in the month of June (year 2022) marking the first of its kind for Barbados on the continent.
The evening unfolded with a carefully curated program that blended the cultural richness of Barbados with the international flair of the diplomatic gathering. Culinary delights from Bajan cuisine were served, delighting the palates of the guests.
