NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 1 – Bar owners have asked the County of Nairobi to give them 18-months before moving away from residential areas.
Under their umbrella body the Pubs Entertainment and Restaurants Association of Kenya (PERAK), they say an order by Governor Johnson Sakaja to relocate to the Central Business District (C.B.D) needs time and resources.
“It is important to consider the rights of investors who have paid the fees for licenses and continue to pay taxes and contribute to the growth of the economy,” said Michael Muthami, PERAK Chairperson.
“We propose the County government give us 6 months to comply with noise levels and between 12- 18 months to move.”
According to the bar owners, over 36,000 employees are at risk of losing their jobs if the directive proceeds.
They also estimate that the County Government stands to lose an upwards of Sh52 Million in liquor license fees.
“Blanket condemnation of bars is improper because we have bars who have already complied,” he said.
“They have spent millions of shillings to install soundproof material within their premises. They should be left to operate.’’ Added Muthami.
Sakaja’s decision was backed by President William Ruto recently, saying bars loud noised near residential areas were affecting children.
“Governor Sakaja, please keep the noise away from our children. You have our support,” President Ruto said earlier.
