NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 7 – The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has said that it will work closely with Safaricom to address the recent spate of M-Pesa outages that disrupt the country’s economy.
CBK Governor Kamau Thugge said the intermittent blackouts of M-Pesa are something to be concerned about since they disrupt mobile money transactions for users.
“This is an area of concern .We are very in close touch with Safaricom to see how MPESA outages can be alleviated because we recognize the risks to the economy following the outages,” he said.
Recently, M-Pesa services have been disrupted by outages that have hit hard users and businesses due to the unavailability of mobile money services.
Early last month, for example, Kenyans were unable to use the M-Pesa service for hours after the system experienced a slowdown. However, the telco later rectified the problem after widespread outcry.
