Churchman to chair IEBC Selection Panel, to advertise 7 slots Tuesday

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 6 — Nelson Makanda has been elected to chair the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Selection Panel deputized by Charity Kisotu.

Speaking after panel’s inaugural meeting on Monday, Makanda, who has served as a top official in the Evangelical Alliance of Kenya (EAK), said that the panel will advertise vacancies for seven commissioners on Tuesday.

President William Ruto appointed the seven-member selection panel on February 28 to recruit IEBC Chairperson and commissioners.

Other members of the panel include Bethuel Sugut, Novince Atieno, Evans Misati, Benson Ngugi and Fatuma Saman.

The commissioner slots at the electoral body fell vacant following the the exit of former IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati, and former commissioners.

Chebukati exited alongside Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu at the end of their six year term in January.

Former IEBC Vice Chairperson Juliana Cherera, commissioners Justus Nyang’aya and Francis Wanderi resigned in December 2022.

President Ruto to dismissed Commissioner Irene Masit after a tribunal former to investigate her conduct and that of Cherera, Nyang’aya and Wanderi recommended her expulsion.

Masit had faced a tribunal chaired by Justice Aggrey Muchelule which was formed following a recommendation by the National Assembly.
