NAIROBI, Kenya, January 11 – The Employment and Labor Relations Court in Nairobi has issued conservatory orders barring the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) from recruiting or appointing a new managing director following a petition challenging the process.
In a ruling delivered on January 3 by Lady Justice Agnes M.K. Nzei, KAA and its agents were restrained from “recruiting, processing, interviewing, and/or appointing any person” for the managing director position advertised on December 20, 2024.
The orders came after the GEMA Watho Association, a group of lawyers, and Francis Njoroge Wanjiku filed a petition alleging the re-advertisement of the position violated constitutional principles.
“This re-advertisement is a blatant disregard for the principles of accountability and merit-based selection as outlined in the Constitution,” the petitioners argued, raising concerns about transparency and fairness in the recruitment process.
The matter is set for an inter-parties hearing on January 22 via a virtual link. The court also directed KAA and the State Law Office to file and present their responses within seven days.
