NYERI, Kenya, Feb 18 – The family of freedom hero Dedan Kimathi want Kenya kwanza government to find his remains so that in the event his wife mukami kimathi passes on she is buried beside him.
Speaking during Kimathi 66 commemoration day at historic Ruringu stadium kimathi daughter Evelyn Waniugu said that it’s unfortunate that sixty years after his death his remains are still jailed at Kamiti where he was hanged in unmarked grave .
“For us as a family we are worried lot since our mother Mukami Kimathi is ailing and counting days before her eventual passing on, we are wondering in the event of her death will we be able to bury her beside her husband whose grave is still ukown” said Wanjugu.
Wanjugu said they are however optimistic that Kenya kwanza government will be able to trace the remains for an honourable burial .
“At the moment we know they are doing something about it it’s a top secret but we may have breaking news soon” said wanjugu.
Kimathi was captured by colonial forces in 1956 at karunaini village in nyeri during clonour for indipendence and hanged at kamiti where he was buried in unmarked grave .
Previous attempts to find his grave have proved futile and at one time a former warden took human rights activist in a circus at the facility.
Nyeri senator wahome Mwangi and his nyandarua counterpart John Methu supported wanjugu sentiments saying that their is need for renewed efforts to find the remains for decent burial.
“As chair of various committee and members of this government we want to assure the family that their concerns will be taken care of and efforts are being made” said Methu.
During the colourful but emotional events freedom fighters present an their siblings urged the government to allocate them land saying that previous regimes have only succeeded in cheated them .
