NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 2 – Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has been summoned by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over corrupt dealings while at the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (Ketraco).
EACC has asked the previous Ketraco boss to appear before the agency next week.
On February this year, Barasa resigned as Ketraco boss before his tenure ended in April.
He resigned hours before responding to audit queries to the National Assembly Public Investments Committee (PIC).
PIC had also invited Senior Kenya Power Managers over Sh600 million in excess paid to the Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) for a project in Marsabit.
LTWP is said to have wired millions of shillings to wrong accounts, raising concerns among Parliamentarians.
The Committee wanted to know why the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) provided LTWP with erroneous accounts. It also wanted to establish who was behind it.
Members of Parliament (MPs) were baffled by his abrupt resignation at a time when he was supposed to appear before the committee.
Immediately he resigned, Barasa launched his Kakamega gubernatorial seat interest with an aim to revive the area’s sugar industry that was ailing.
He sought to succeed former Governor Wycliffe Oparanya with likes of past Lugari MP Ayub Savula, Samuel Omukoko and UDP’s Cyrus Jirongo , among others.
Barasa went on to win the highly contested sit with 192,929 votes ahead of closest challenger Cleophas Malala with 159,908.
