NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 11 – Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP) member states have announced plans to launch a centralized Day Ahead Market (DAM) in 2025, aiming to provide affordable, reliable, and sustainable electricity to over 620 million people across the region.
The initiative, unveiled during a high-level ministerial conference in Mombasa, will integrate shared infrastructure and facilitate low-cost energy trading, including renewables.
Energy and Petroleum CS Opiyo Wandayi emphasized the importance of cooperation and aligning national priorities with regional goals to ensure the market’s success.
Okasai Opolot, EAPP Council Chairperson, called for unified policies to achieve seamless integration, highlighting the economic and environmental benefits of renewable energy.
The DAM will boost cross-border power trade, leveraging the region’s renewable energy potential to enhance electricity access, reliability, and affordability.
