NAIROBI, Kenya, January 30, 2026 – Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has revealed plans to establish a national futsal league while accelerating the development of beach football.

Hussein emphasized that futsal will play a central role in shaping the future of Kenyan football, describing it as an area that has long been overlooked.

“We are new in futsal. It is a competition we have not been participating in, and now we will put in a lot of work and investment into it. The first immediate step is to start a futsal league,” the president said.

Hussein says the establishment of the league will be integral in elevating the standards of Kenyan football, with the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) on the horizon.

“For the first time, we had a futsal competition in the AFCON qualifiers. We are also developing beach football. With AFCON coming in 2027, these programmes will be critical in the development of our national teams, both men and women,” he said.

His comments come in the wake of Kenya’s exit from the Africa Futsal Cup qualifiers, following an 18-11 aggregate loss to Namibia.

The Harambee Sambas lost 8-4 in the first leg of the qualifier in Swakompund, Namibia, a week ago, before going down 7-10 in the second leg in Nairobi on Wednesday.

Looking ahead, the FKF president expressed optimism that 2026 will be even bigger, promising expanded competitions, improved quality, and increased investment as football diversifies beyond the traditional 11-a-side format.

“2025 was great, but 2026 will be bigger. We are looking at better competition, more excitement, and more partners coming on board. This is just the beginning,” Hussein said.

Key to the success of these programmes is abundant sponsorships, a fact not lost on the president.

He pointed to FKF’s collaboration with Mozzart Bet as a model of sustainable sponsorship.

“We sometimes value the wrong sponsors, but Mozzart Bet has shown that it is possible to have a solid partnership with FKF that can grow year on year. This is a major milestone for us, and we are very grateful,” the president said.

On Thursday, the betting firm announced an enhanced, three-year sponsorship of Ksh 90 million towards the FKF Cup.
