NAIROBI, Kenya, April 6 – Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has pledged to create bilateral air service agreements with neighboring countries to enable local airlines to spread their wings within East Africa.
Murkomen, who graced Jambo Jet Airlines’ 10th anniversary, said that the move would make air travel more accessible and significantly promote economic growth.
The CS further stated that plans are underway to see the development of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Wilson Airport.
“More reforms such as a new aviation policy as well as master plans for the development of the JKIA and Wilson Airport are underway,” he stated.
“We will also continue negotiating Bilateral Air Service Agreements with our neighbors to enable airlines such as Jambo Jet to travel to more destinations in the region,” he added.
He affirmed that the government will relentlessly support local airlines, a step that will provide more than 500,000 direct and indirect job opportunities in the country.
“The government is committed to making air travel more widely accessible to promote faster movement and increase opportunities for economic growth,” he stated.
Acknowledging Jambo Jet’s contribution to Kenyan domestic travel, Murkomen pointed out that the airline has been in line with the Bottom Up Economic Agenda since it has enabled small businesses to transport their products in a diverse range of markets.
The CS has further highlighted that air transport has recorded significant growth following President William Ruto’s tax relief last year.
