NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 2 – More than half of smartphones currently used on the Safaricom network are Xiaomi devices, highlighting the Chinese brand’s growing dominance in Kenya’s mobile phone market.
The disclosure was made on Friday during the launch of the Redmi Note 15 Series in Nairobi. The new lineup includes three smartphone models targeting users seeking affordability, performance and durability.
Speaking at the event, Bruno Kimutai, Safaricom’s terminals operations and planning lead, said Xiaomi devices now account for over 50 percent of smartphones on the Safaricom network.
He attributed the brand’s strong performance to its integration of artificial intelligence technologies, which enhance everyday user experiences across smartphones and smart devices.
“Safaricom will continue partnering with Xiaomi to roll out affordable smartphones to Kenyan consumers,” Kimutai said.
Xiaomi International Country Manager Matt Huang said the Redmi Note 15 Series is designed to meet diverse user needs by combining stable performance, advanced imaging, durable design and high-quality displays.
He added that the devices are built for daily use while maintaining reliable performance and camera capabilities.
Xiaomi currently ranks third in Africa’s smartphone market, with a market share of 12.6 percent, and continues to record steady growth across the continent.
The company has in recent years increased its investment in Africa, expanding its footprint through a diversified product strategy aimed at both entry-level and mid-range consumers.
