NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 1 – Tech firm Huawei has launched a drive that seeks to boost the use of renewable energy sources such as solar energy in Africa.
Through its renewable energy arm Huawei Digital Power, the firm intends to address energy needs in the continent as well as implement solutions touching generation, transmission, distribution, usage, and storage of renewable power to reduce the gap that exists in the market.
The launch which was initiated during the Huawei FusionSolar Channel partner Summit 2022 that took place in Johannesburg, South Africa is backed by the larger share the content enjoys in terms of solar energy resources yet it has only 1 per cent of the solar capacity installed globally.
Speaking during the Summit, Huawei Digital Power Sub-Saharan Africa’s president Xia Hesheng noted the company is committed to championing the use of solar energy so that the continent may achieve its renewable energy goals.
“Countries across the African region are working towards their various respective development goals and hydro-electric sources lagging in supplying sufficient grid power, renewable energy is playing an increasingly important role and it is expected to contribute 22 per cent of the continent’s total energy consumption by 2030,” he said.
With a population of over 1 billion people in Africa, less than half of it has access to electricity against the global average of 90.5 per cent.
Huawei intends to cover the gap by integrating digital solutions to cover the generation, transmission, distribution, usage, and storage of solar energy.
“Huawei is committed to building a strong ecosystem in Africa,” stated Hesheng noting that the firm is committed to securing the profitability of partners and simplifying policies and processes based on its technological strength in PV and its channel strategy.
The Huawei FusionSolar Channel partner Summit 2022 brought together more than 30 channel partners from Sub-Saharan Africa who underscored the importance of building the ecosystem to meet Africa’s energy needs with renewable and Solar Photovoltaic (PV).
Hein Engelbrecht, CEO of ICT supplier and valued Huawei partner Mustek, shared an outlook on how the two companies are charting a shared growth path.
“Mustek and Huawei’s partnership is built on trust and shared understanding. We believe that these new ingredients will go a long way to ensure us being the choice for solar solutions in Sub-Saharan Africa within the next five years,” said Engelbrecht.
