NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 9 – Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya now says he will not resign to pursue politics in the upcoming elections in August.
Speaking during a press conference on Wednesday, Munya stated that after reflection he has decided to shelve his political ambitions of seeking any elective seat in the 2022 polls.
“I have been reflecting on my political journey and talking to my friends and supporters and looking at the current political situation. I have come into a conclusion that is at this point in time it’s not best for me to be running,” he said.
Munya who has previously shown his intention to vie for Meru Gubernatorial seat stated he will instead focus on reforms in the agriculture sector to address the plight of farmers.
“I want to use my resources and energy to continue serving the farming community from the balance of the time in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Administration. I have been travelling across the country and farmers having been asking If you leave what will happen to the reforms that are still ongoing. It is one of the issues I have been agonizing over” he said
Munya who is the party leader of Party of National Unity (PNU) further pointed out that he will support the gubernatorial candidate in Meru County under the Azimio la Umoja movement.
“We want to strengthen leadership between PNU and Azimio la Umoja as we craft a working relationship. I want to put my energy in supporting Azimio so that we can win the coming elections,” he stated.
The Former Meru Governor however insisted that he will not take a back seat when it comes to deciding who will be the next governor of the County.
Munya pointed out that he will work with locals to sieve through who is best suited to become the next governor of Meru among several aspirant who are eyeing the top seat in the county.
“Obviously I will support a candidate who will make a difference in the development of Meru County and also a candidate who will work within Azimio. I believe Azimio candidate will make a very good candidate, “he said.
With less than 5 months to the 2022 general elections, the Meru Gubernatorial race is already taking shape.
As opposed to the 2017 contest that was a two-horse race and where the Jubilee wave worked in favor of Governor Kiraitu Murungi, the 2022 battle appears more crowded.
Meru Women Rep Kawira Mwangaza will also be eyeing the seat.
“Those who think I will just be seated in the back should know that I will be actively involved. Even this weekend I will be in the ground, “Munya noted.
