NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 19 – Despite having an extensive experience spanning over a decade in the field of forensics pathology, government pathologist Johansen Oduor acknowledges that the case of Rita Waeni Muendo, whose dismembered body was discovered in a dustbin in RoysambuSunday, is unlike any he has seen before.
Oduor has examined numerous bodies and was involved in high-profile cases in the course of his career including that of River Yala victims whose deaths were linked to state agents and the Shakahola starvation cult victims.
However, after examining the 20-year-old Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) student’s body on Friday, he expressed his shock on the manner of the killing.
He revealed that both legs were cleanly cut, and the examination indicated a significant loss of blood, likely occurring post-mortem.
“This is the first time I have come across such an incident. In my forensics life, I have never come across such an incident,” he told reporters Friday.
Oduor further explained that the victim’s skin looked like it was cut with a sharp object while the bone appeared to have been sawed off with what appeared to be a hacksaw.
He also observed that her killer(s) also tried to clip the victim’s fingernails in what he argues could be an attempt to erase their DNA from the victim.
Samples from the victim’s nails have been collected for further analysis, which could assist detectives in identifying the person responsible for this heinous crime
The Government pathologist noted that the way the victim was killed could point to someone who understood well what he was doing.
“This is a person who knows what he was doing,” he added.
As of Friday, detectives were yet to recover the head of the victim.
Three suspects are currently in custody including a foreign national in connection with the killing that has attracted calls for the government to declare femicide a national disaster following increased worrying incidents of murder in apartments.
