NAIROBI, Kenya, June 12 – The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has finalized the rehabilitation of Kakamega, Kitale, and Migori airstrips as it seeks to reduce congestion at the Kisumu International Airport.
KAA Managing Director Alex Gitari noted that the interconnectivity of domestic airports will drive business and offer convenient travel options.
“We are proud to support this development and meet the demand for flights in the region,” he said.
Gitari added that plans were underway to expand Kabunde Airstrip in Homabay, reflecting the recovery and growth of domestic travel.
“Plans are in place to expand the runway at Kabunde Airstrip. We’re also in the final stages of scoping and designing the airstrip’s terminal building,” he said.
While Lichota Airstrip in Migori received Sh310 million in upgrades, Kakamega and Kitale Airstrips got Sh174 million and Sh221 million, respectively.
The airports in Kakamega and Migori will play a significant role in promoting tourism, and the Kitale facility is essential for the transportation of horticultural goods.
An expansion of the Kakamega Airstrip will allow larger aircraft to land at the facility.
