NAIROBI, Kenya Feb 1 – People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has hinted at possible international legal action against President William Ruto, warning that no leader is above the law, even beyond Kenya’s borders.
Speaking during a church service at ACK Gitugi in Murang’a County, Karua told worshippers that leaders who break the law should not assume they are safe simply because they hold power.
She suggested that cases can be pursued both locally and internationally.
Karua was addressing the congregation alongside other United Opposition leaders.
“Kenya is not a dictatorship. It is a democracy with a constitution,” she said, warning that the country must not be run as if the law does not exist. She accused President Ruto’s government of undermining the constitution and using state institutions to silence critics.
She urged Kenyans to value justice over money, saying greed and fear are the biggest obstacles to freeing the country.
According to Karua, only a united population can stop abuse of power and protect democracy.
Karua also warned police officers, soldiers, and other security personnel against obeying illegal orders.
She said officers who carry out unconstitutional commands risk being left alone to face the law in the future.
“You do not have to obey illegal orders,” she told them, adding that history shows powerful politicians often abandon security officers when accountability comes.
Karua also alleged interference by security agencies in recent by-elections, claiming opposition supporters were blocked while violence was allowed to take place.
She vowed that the opposition would not allow similar actions in future polls, especially the 2027 General Election.
The PLP leader said the opposition has already begun gathering evidence and will fight on all fronts locally, regionally, and internationally to defend electoral integrity.
She warned that leaders should not rely on immunity or past positions to shield themselves from justice.
“Our struggle is peaceful,” Karua said. “It is not a war of guns, but a war of the mind, the vote, and justice.”
