NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 21 – Kenya Commercial Bank assistant head coach Godfrey Oduor admits his charges were shaky at the start of their eventual 1-0 win over Kenya Police in their FKF Premier League opener on Sunday.
Michael Oduor’s solitary strike was enough to guarantee victory for the bankers as the policemen were given a reality check with regards to their title credentials.
“Kudos to the boys…I think they have done very well considering it is the first match of the season. We have been out of action for a while and at least we could so that there was some jittery in their play, in the first minutes of the game,” Oduor said.
It was a match filled with chances as both teams fought to kickstart their campaign on a positive note.
Former Gor Mahia winger Clifton Miheso forced KCB goalkeeper Gabriel Andika to turn the ball around the post for a corner whereas Michael Mutinda spurned a wonderful chance to score for the bankers after being set up by Henry Ochieng who had capitalized on a poor pass by Police custodian, Job Ochieng.
Oduor credited their opponents for a thrilling and challenging match, which he noted, makes the bankers’ win even sweeter.
“When you win a match, it gives you confidence going into the next one. Police, today, were pushing really hard, especially in the dying minutes because they were hoping they could get something out of the pressure they were mounting on our defence. Luckily, we rose to the occasion and managed to get all the points,” he said.
The bankers next face last season’s runners-up, Kakamega Homeboyz, on Saturday and Oduor stated that their intention is go on an extended winning run to have a chance at their maiden title in the top flight.
“Of course, we will go back to our training ground and work hard for our next match because we have three more points to fight for. We are looking forward to a great match,” he said.
KCB lie sixth on the league standings with three points.
