NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 31 – Kenya Power Company customers who are looking to replace their non-functional power meters will have to wait longer to get new replacements amid shortage of the machines.
The power company admits that it has been grappling with the scarcity, impacting its ability to replace destroyed meters.
Landlords have been urging their tenants to ration their power usages as well as buy tokens through the KPLC to prevent an impact.
“This is to kindly inform you that most of the meters at the premises are not functioning as per Kenya Power report. There are no new meters at the moment so the power company cannot do replacement,” One of the landlord in a notice to tenant said.
“We therefore, request you to be estimating your consumption and make payment to Kenya Power to avoid accumulation of bills as we wait for the issue to be resolved,” it added.
Scarcity of the gadgets means customers whose machine have been destroyed will have to incur heavy losses at their business premises as well as homes as they await for replacements.
In the full year ended June 30, the utility company posted a Sh3.50 billion net profit, representing a 134 per cent growth from Sh1.49 billion in a similar period last year.
The growth was mainly driven by a 6.9 per cent growth in sales and an improvement of 1.5 per cent in system efficiency to 77.57 per cent. It was also enhanced by a 4.6 per cent reduction in operating costs.
The increased earnings were also attributable to reduced tax costs with the firm’s tax expense for the year under review reducing from Sh6.71 billion to Sh1.62 billion.
