In commemoration of Commonwealth Day 2024, observed on March 11th, the British High Commissioner to Kenya, H.E. Neil Wigan CVO OBE, played host to a distinguished gathering at his official residence in Muthaiga for the annual Commonwealth Day Reception. The event served as a poignant reflection of the enduring ties between Kenya and the Commonwealth—a family of nations spanning Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, the Pacific, and Europe.
The ambiance resonated with the theme of unity in diversity, as laughter and conversations filled the air. Representatives from the government, diplomatic corps, media, private sector, and the vibrant Commonwealth communities in Kenya gathered under the same roof.
The 2024 Commonwealth Day celebration held special significance, marking 75 years since the establishment of the modern Commonwealth. The journey from the early days of the Commonwealth to the present had been a remarkable one, characterized by shared values, cooperation, and a commitment to fostering peace and prosperity.
In curating an unforgettable Commonwealth Day Reception, the British High Commission extended invitations to a group of young dynamic and innovative individuals. These special guests were carefully selected from diverse areas including technology, startups, innovation, climate change, creatives, and security. From groundbreaking technological marvels to inventive climate change solutions, the atmosphere was charged with the spirit of creativity and possibility.
During his insightful remarks at the Commonwealth Day Reception, H.E. Neil Wigan emphasized the pivotal role of innovation and education within the Commonwealth.
“Today’s event builds on the success of this year’s Commonwealth Edition of Kenya Innovation Week, where we witnessed the transformative power of innovation across the Commonwealth. The incredible levels of skill and creativity among Commonwealth innovators were truly inspiring. To showcase this, we have invited a selection of these innovators to present their groundbreaking work here today. Among them is Elly, the founder of Signverse, who has received the prestigious Commonwealth Innovation Award. Elly’s assistive technology translates speech into Kenya Sign Language using artificial intelligence. H.E. Neil Wigan also underscored the significant contributions made by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom (CSC), which annually awards over 800 scholarships and fellowships for postgraduate study and professional development to Commonwealth citizens. Since 1960, more than 1,800 scholars from Kenya have benefited from these prestigious awards.
