Waza Wazi, the acclaimed Kenyan leather goods brand founded by visionary entrepreneur Chebet Mutai, is set to make its mark in the United States with the opening of its first store in Denver, Colorado. Known for its Afrocentric luxury leather products, Waza Wazi’s new location will offer a range of meticulously crafted handbags, travel bags, and accessories that celebrate modern-day Africa.

The announcement was made by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Investments, Trade & Industry, Rebecca Miano, ahead of the upcoming State Visit by H.E. President William Ruto to the US. She convened a business briefing to apprise stakeholders, executives, and investors and align on key areas and opportunities to be pursued during this visit. This significant development underscores Kenya’s commitment to fostering international business relationships and showcasing the country’s vibrant entrepreneurial spirit.
Chebet’s journey began in 2011, when she was still importing handbags from Dubai for sale back home. The business was profitable, but something was missing. She yearned for a deeper connection to her work, something that resonated with her African heritage and told a story beyond mere commerce. Then, an idea flickered through her mind like a spark. What if she could create her own leather bags? Bags that would not only be high-quality but also tell the story of modern-day Africa to the world.
In May 2012, Chebet began crafting homemade handbags. It started small, with just a few designs made in her living room. Yet, there was a unique quality to her creations—a blend of form, fashion, and function, deeply rooted in African culture. She named her brand Waza Wazi, a term that embodied an open-minded outlook on life, self-expression, and a celebration of diversity.

Chebet’s vision for Waza Wazi was clear: to be bold ambassadors for Africa by sharing its stories through her leather art. Each piece was not just a product; it was a work of art, meticulously crafted from locally sourced leather and adorned with traditional beads. Her handbags, travel bags, and small leather accessories quickly gained attention for their beauty and quality. Each of her items tells a unique story, from the vibrant colors reminiscent of Maasai beadwork to the sleek, modern designs that appealed to a global audience. Chebet is ensuring that her brand maintains a balance between traditional African artistry and contemporary fashion.
