KILGORIS, Kenya, Jan 19 – Business activities were paralyzed at Kilgoris Town in Narok County as traders demonstrated over poor service delivery.
During the peaceful demo, traders petitioned the County Government to improve services.
It is not the first time the traders are demonstrating as similar demo was held on Monday, lamenting on poor sanitation, lighting, and harassment by revenue collectors.
“As traders we need to get value for the taxes we are paying. There are poor toilet services, no water, no street lights and yet the county government expects us to carry on with our activities without a hitch. Where on Earth?” lamented Stephen Ole Muntet.
They urged the county government to consider reducing daily revenue collection from Sh50 to Sh20 per vendor.
“We urge the county government to review the revenue structure, as small-scale traders we can’t manage to pay Sh 50 per day. If we do that there will be no need to for us to remain in business since there will be no profit,” said Elizabeth Mong’are.
It took the intervention of the speaker of Narok County Assembly Davis Dikirr and Transmara West Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Mohamed Noor Hassan for the traders who had camped at the Transmara West Sub County Administrator’s office to resume business.
The Speaker promised to engage their leadership and escalate their issues to the county executive promising to offer a speedy response.
Hassan hailed the traders for voicing their grievances in a peaceful manner and urged them to maintain calm as the government tries to address the issues raised.
