NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 8 – Acting Deputy Inspector General of Police Abdalla Komesha has appealed to passengers to report reckless drivers to the police amid traffic accidents linked to Easter rush.
He spoke on Saturday following an accident in Migori where at least ten people were reported dead after a truck lost control and rammed into pedestrians.
‘’For passengers, ensure you report any reckless driver to the police,’’ he said.
Komesha advised motorists and road users to observe traffic rules while travelling to avoid accidents.
“We therefore appeal to all road users to comply with traffic rules by putting on safety belts, adhering to speed limits, avoiding overloading and reckless driving, driving while texting, and driving unroadworthy vehicles,” he added.
Komesha’s appeal came days after the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome singled out road traffic accidents as a major cause of injuries and fatalities, with most of the victims being pedestrians, motorcyclists and pillion passengers. He noted the accidents are largely attributed to preventable human error.
Koome said that due to the ongoing rains, some roads may be flooded, further urging motorists to drive carefully.
He cautioned the public against overindulging in alcohol during the festive season warning that those found driving while intoxicated will be arrested and dealt with according to the law.
“With roads expected to be very busy, Traffic Officers will remain watchful to ensure free flow of traffic, compliance with traffic regulations, enforcement of traffic rules, and provision of assistance to the public as needed,” he said.
