NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 25 – Demand for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Kenya rose by 14.6 percent to 251,425 metric tonnes in the six months to December 2025, according to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
This marks an increase from 219,416 metric tonnes recorded during a similar period in 2024.
EPRA attributed the growth to sustained clean cooking campaigns and the government’s LPG expansion strategy.
“This growth is largely attributable to sustained clean cooking promotion initiatives and the Government-led LPG growth strategy,” the authority said in its latest biannual statistics report.
Adoption has been further supported by the National LPG Growth Strategy, which aims to double per capita consumption to 15 kilograms by 2030 from the current average of about 7 kilograms.
The uptake has also been boosted by VAT exemptions introduced under the Finance Act, 2023 to make LPG more affordable and accelerate the shift to clean energy.
However, concerns remain over affordability, with the cost of refilling a 6kg gas cylinder still averaging about Sh1,390, posing a challenge to wider adoption.
