MAUA, Kenya, Jan 25 – Matatu operators in Maua Town, Meru County have increased fares by Sh100 amid high demand from learners returning back to schools.
From Maua to Meru town, for example, transport cost has increased from Sh250 to Sh350, forcing parents to dig dipper into their pockets.
Michael Mutuma, a parent, said that he has been impacted the most as he has three children reporting back to school.
“Any increase is a big burden to us, since even putting food on the table is not easy. The 100-bob added is really pinching.’ he lamented.
Most of the parents complained that operators were taking advantage of the school reopening period to ask lll charges.
One of Matatu drivers at the Maua Bus Stage who sought anonymity said price hikes were expected since they have to utilize the period to cars good sums of money.
