KAKAMEGA, Kenya, Jan 1 – Kakamega Senator, Boni Khalwale, has asked Members of County Assemblies (MCA’s) to use their positions to oversight governors, to ensure equity in development in the wards.
He warned them against using their positions to intimidate governors, which is far from the mandate that brought them to the Assembly.
Khalwale said the dismissal of the impeachment motion of Meru Governor, Kawira Mwangaza, was a message to MCAs that they were not elected to remove governors from office.
“They were elected to sit at the County Assembly to formulate laws and budgets that will ensure that all corners of the county get their share of development. That is the work of an MCA,” he stressed.
He told MCAs to be professional and learn from Members of Parliament (MPs) and Senators who are serving the electorate through proper legislation.
The Senator noted that despite the constitutional provision that MPs and Senators can impeach the President, it has never been done in Kenya noting that what MPs and Senators do is to push the President to perform his duties to the citizenry.
“Uhuru Kenyatta has been President for the last 10 years, have you ever seen an impeachment motion initiated against him. President William Ruto is in office, you will not encounter any impeachment motion against him,” he added.
The Senator warned that he will not entertain infighting between MCAs and governors in Kakamega and will act according to the constitutional requirement.
He urged Kakamega MCAs to oversight Governor, Fernandes Barasa, to equitably distribute funds to all wards of the county, proportionate with the population.
“We have agreed with the Speaker of Kakamega County Assembly, James Namatsi, whom I will be visiting in February this year for a friendly discussion to chat on how we can empower you MCAs to perform your duties for our children to get bursaries and development projects to be implemented in all the wards,” he noted.
