NSE urges private sector to empower women

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 8 – The National Securities Exchange (NSE) has called upon the private sector to implement Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) that will promote gender equality in their markets, industries, and organizations.

NSE, which held this year’s International Women’s Day celebrations in collaboration with the Global Compact Network Kenya, United Nations (UN) Women, and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), joined over 100 global stock exchanges globally to advocate for gender equality in institutions.

NSE chief business officer Mbithe Muema said that they will launch dialogues that will point out the fundamental role women play in business development.

“The Nairobi Securities Exchange is committed to accelerating gender equality in Kenya through promoting best practices and enhancing dialogue on the critical role women play in business and sustainable development,” she stated.

According to the IFC Regional Director for Eastern Africa, Mary Porter Peschka, engaging women in economic participation in both businesses and the government will be a key solution to addressing gender gaps in households, societies, and economies.

“The Regional Director for Eastern Africa, Mary Porter Peschka highlighted that increasing women’s economic participation and achieving gender parity in leadership, in both business and government, can help address broader gender gaps in households, societies, and economies,” Peschka stated.

“Development finance organizations and the private sector play a key role here in addressing the challenges women face.”

According to the Global Compact Network Kenya, through Program Manager Esther Yong, institutions must invest in women so as to see the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
