NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 10 — A group of religious leaders in Nyandarua County endorsed the county’s newly executed alcohol control law urging firm enforcement.
Briefing the press on Friday, the clerics termed the law as fundamental in the war against alcohol abuse in the county, especially among the youths.
The clergy urged the county government to ensure fair and firm enforcement that creates no room for corruption.
“There should be no gap and illegal alcohol operations should be allowed in the county,” the clerics said in a joint appeal.
They called for clear branding of vehicles ferrying alcoholic products to support regulation.
Counties in central region have been racing to review alcohol control legislation amid high prevalence of alcohol abuse and illicit brews.
In a report released by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) in 2023, the Central region reported the highest prevalence of potable spirits (4.1 percent) followed by Coast (3.2 percent) and Rift Valley (3.1 percent).
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been leading government efforts against illicit brews warning local administrators who condone the menace of firm disciplinary action.
At the onset of the campaign in 2023, Gachagua vowed to push for the dismissal of Chiefs and Assistance Chiefs who fail to root out illicit liquor in their jurisdictions.
Speaking at his home constituency of Mathira on Thursday, Gachagua termed the campaign a success.
“I have driven along many villages and I can attest that we are now seeing fruits of our fight against brews going by the numbers of young ones spotted as you drive along am sure we will win,” Gachagua stated.
