NAIROBI, Kenya Jan 31 – President William Ruto’s Friday visit to Kisumu came with loud cheers, packed streets and images of huge crowds that quickly spread online.
But Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina has thrown cold water on the celebration, warning that political excitement on the streets does not always translate into votes at the ballot.
In a post on X, Ole Kina reminded leaders and supporters alike that crowds do not win elections.
“Umati mkubwa bila kura ni mchezo tu,” the senator said. “Big crowds without votes are just a game. Registering is not voting. In 2027, come out and vote and finish this job—game over.”
His comments came just hours after President Ruto received a warm welcome in Kisumu, a region long known as an ODM stronghold and historically hostile ground for him at the ballot box.
In the 2022 General Election, Ruto managed only a small fraction of votes from the region.
Since the formation of the broad-based government however following his political pact with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Kisumu has become noticeably more welcoming to the President.
Each visit now attracts massive crowds, with residents lining roads and public spaces to see him.
According to the Senator, Kisumu has always been good at turning up for rallies, yet poor at turning out on election day.
“Kujiandikisha si kura,” he said. “Registering is not voting.”
