NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 7 – The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has warned the public against the use of vaginal pearls claimed to have cleansing attributes amid a spike in circulation of “detox” pearls in the market.
In a statement issued Monday regarding a brand identified as “Yoni Pearls”, the Pharmacy Board said the products and other similar brands are unregistered in Kenya.
The board further warned that the pearls also referred as herbal tampons or cleansing pearls pose public health risks.
Promoters of the products claim vaginal pearls can resolve common reproductive health issues such as recurrent yeast and bacterial vaginosis infections, infertility and Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition in which the ovaries produce an abnormal amount of androgens, male sex hormones often present in women in small amounts.
The product is mostly sold online in sets of three with prices ranging form Sh600 to Sh1,000 a set.
The Pharmacy Board pointed out that ‘Yoni’ is neither registered nor authorized for use in Kenya as required under the Pharmacy and Poisons Act (Cap 244).
“Please refrain from distribution, sale, or use of these products. Stay safe and report suspicious health products to PPB,” Chief Executive Officer Fred Siyoi appealed in a statement.
Siyoi advised against the distribution, supply, sale or use of the pearls and any other unregistered products with similar claims as the PPB cannot guarantee their quality, safety or efficacy.
He also urged the public to report all suspicious health products and technologies the Board.
