NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 23 — President William Ruto has issued a stern warning against the dumping of sewage and other waste material into the Nairobi River.
The Head of State issued the warning on Wednesday when he reiterated his government’s commitment to taking Nairobi back to its glorious days.
Speaking during the launch of the Nairobi River Commission in Korogocho, Nairobi, President Ruto said the government has availed Sh22 billion to expand the Nairobi City County sewer system to service growing housing projects in the city.
“Those who are polluting our rivers with sewage, I am putting you on notice. That must stop,” he said.
“We have resolved that the city must not only reclaim its glorious reputation as Africa’s green city under the sun but also live up to its ancestral identity as the river of cool, fresh and safe waters.”
President Ruto said the pollution of the Nairobi River poses a health hazard to residents of the city and neighboring counties consuming its water
He said Nairobi must regain its cleanliness and be safe and healthy for everyone.
“The unhealthy environmental situation must be corrected to restore Nairobi to its true identity,” he said.
Ruto exuded confidence that the Nairobi River Commission will bring in fresh impetus to accelerate restoration efforts.
