NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 12 – Safaricom customers will still be able to redeem Bonga Points after the telco reversed an earlier plan to introduce an expiry on points.

Points accrued before 2019, would have been rendered useless were the implementation to begin January 1 2023.

On Tuesday, the operator disputed a claim that it had set an expiry timeline for Bonga Point Loyalty programme, according to Business Daily.

By March 2022, the telco had amassed a liability of Sh4.5 billion.

”At no point did Safaricom announce that Bonga (Points) were expiring,” Safaricom said,” the Telco said.

In 2020, Safaricom customers have redeemed more than 1 billion Bonga points in two months through the Bonga For Good Initiative, which came to an end on 4th June 2020.

The initiative, which sought to cushion Kenyans against the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, saw over 600,000 customers donate points equivalent to over Sh330 million at over 40,000 Lipa na M-PESA merchants across the country.

Food and household items, solar-lighting solutions and entertainment accounted for most of the points redeemed, while Kenyans also donated their points as a show of goodwill, with over Sh150 million being redeemed from points transferred from one person to another.
