NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 26 – Police Commissioner Major General Mohammed Hussein Ali announced a major reshuffle on Friday, in what was seen as a move to stem rising insecurity in the country.
The changes affecting 19 senior officers did not, however, affect the Capital Nairobi which has hit headlines in recent weeks due to increased cases of murder, carjacking and armed robberies.
In the new changes, Coast Provincial Police chief King’ori Mwangi moves to Western Province to serve in the same capacity, replacing Francis Munyambu who has transferred to the Rift Valley Province.
Mr Munyambu will be replacing Joseph Ashimala who moves to the Kiganjo Police Training College as the deputy director.
Coast Deputy Provincial Police chief Leo Nyongesa has been promoted to the post of PPO and he will be replacing Mr Mwangi.
There was no official communication from police headquarters to the media over the changes but Police Spokesman Erick Kiraithe told Capital News that the reshuffle was “routine. All those affected have been notified.”
Others affected in the changes include the North Eastern Provincial Police chief Stephen Chelimo who has been moved to head the Inspection Unit at police headquarters.
He will be replaced by Eastern police Chief Jonathan Kosgey.
When reached on telephone, Mr Munyambu said he is ready to take up his new posting at the Rift Valley.
“I have been informed about the changes and I am prepared to take it up,” he said.
“I have done my best at Western Province and all the achievements I have made I owe them to the support from members of the public,” he said.
The outgoing Coast Provincial Police chief Mr Mwangi said he will be reporting to his new station of work next week.
