NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 14 – Commonwealth Games 5000m champion Beatrice Chebet led a clean Kenyan sweep of the podium places in the women’s senior race at the Cross Internacional de Atapuerca, a World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold event in Spain over the weekend.
Chebet timed 25:37 in first place, ahead of 2021 World Under 20 1500m champion Purity Chepkirui and Lucy Mawia who both clocked 25:50 in second and third place respectively.
The win continues the 22-year-old’s hot streak in 2022, which includes the African title – won at June’s Senior Africa Athletics Championships in Mauritius – and the Commonwealth title clinched at the Birmingham Games.
Chebet also clinched silver at the World Championships in Oregon after clocking 14:46.75 in the women’s 5000m.
Her win in Spain further adds to Chebet’s burgeoning reputation in the cross country, which includes the senior women’s 10km title at the Agnes Tirop Memorial World Cross Country Tour in Eldoret in February this year.
She also finished second at the Elgoibar Juan Muguerza Cross-Country in Spain in January as well as third in the CrossCup de Hannut in Belgium.
