There’s nothing quite like sipping on your favorite drink and enjoying a good meal while soaking up the incredible views of a nearby forest or green scenery.
One Thursday evening at 5 pm, under a sky tinged with the promise of a beautiful sunset, I set out to try a new restaurant in the quintessential locality of Kitisuru. The crisp air carried a hint of anticipation as I wrapped up a few errands in Westlands, ready to embark on my latest culinary adventure. As someone who relishes exploring new dining experiences in the city, I am always on the lookout for the next great spot. I appreciate good food and firmly believe in the adage, “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.”

My latest discovery led me to Kwetu Nairobi, a Curio Collection by Hilton hotel along Peponi Road, a new establishment offering a unique experience for both business and leisure in a residential setting. If you’re on social media, you’ve likely seen posts from enthusiasts showcasing this property—it’s the new popular kid on the block, trending on Instagram and TikTok. Kwetu, a Swahili term meaning “our home,” encapsulates the feeling guests should have here: a blend of luxury and comfort that makes guests feel right at home.

Upon entering the main lobby, I was warmly welcomed by a staff member dressed in vibrant African attire. After a brief introduction, she guided me to the elevator and accompanied me to the fifth floor, where Upepo, the rooftop restaurant, is located.
As I stepped into the beautiful lounge, I was immediately struck by its gorgeous setting. The space boasted a treetop view framed by floor-to-ceiling windows and a retractable roof—something I’ve never seen before in the city. This feature allows you to marvel at the golden hues of the setting sun painting the skies in a dreamy light, a seamless blend of nature and luxury. As night fell, the retractable roof opened to reveal a canvas of stars, adding a touch of magic to the already breathtaking ambiance.

To the extreme left was a bar that was truly a masterpiece of design, featuring an impressive display of drinks that immediately caught my eye. Shelves lined with an array of bottles stretched from floor to ceiling, each one meticulously arranged. Crystal decanters sparkled under the soft, ambient lighting, reflecting the warm glow and creating an inviting atmosphere.
From rare aged whiskies and fine wines to an extensive selection of craft cocktails, the bar offered a visual feast that promised an equally delightful tasting experience. Close by, a wine cellar beckoned with its promise of exceptional vintages, its cool, dimly lit interior a treasure trove for wine connoisseurs.

As I settled in to wine and dine, I noticed an electric fireplace with a striking, modern design. This is actually the best seat (close to the fireplace), if you ask me. Its mesmerizing flames danced within a sleek, glass enclosure, casting a warm, ambient glow that added to the lounge’s inviting atmosphere.
The combination of the beautiful lounge setting, the impressive bar, and the captivating fireplace created a perfect backdrop for an unforgettable evening.

Whenever I step into a restaurant, I have a little ritual—I always ask the chef to surprise me with something from the menu. It’s my way of embracing the unexpected and allowing the culinary artist to guide my taste buds on a delightful journey.
On this lovely evening, as I settled into the cozy ambiance of Kwetu Nairobi’s rooftop restaurant, I couldn’t resist the urge to indulge in this charming tradition once more. With a smile, I beckoned the chef, eager to surrender to their culinary expertise and savor the flavors of their imagination.

For starters, I relished the Laksa chicken alongside a rich Laksa dip, paired harmoniously with crisp white radish and fiery chili pickles. The dish burst with a medley of bold spices and aromatic herbs, each bite offering a delightful balance of creaminess and heat, leaving a lingering warmth on the palate.

Transitioning to the main course, I savored two distinct culinary experiences. The Marranggi beef satay, accompanied by a captivating trilogy sauce, delighted with its succulent meat infused with smoky charred notes, while the Japanese Nasi Goeng, a fragrant fried rice with tender chicken and plump prawns, exuded a comforting umami essence, transporting me to the bustling streets of Tokyo with its authentic flavors.

As the evening progressed, I indulged in the sweet temptation of Pandan Crepes, charming my senses with the delicate aroma of pandan and the creamy sweetness of jaggery ice cream. Each mouthful was a harmonious blend of textures and flavors, evoking nostalgic memories of tropical indulgence and boy oh boy, it was absolutely divine sweetness.

So delectable was the culinary journey that I found myself sinking deeper into the plush couch by the fire place, savoring every moment as I indulged in a perfectly crafted gin cocktail, specially concocted for me by the mixologist. With each sip, I felt the stresses of the day melt away, replaced by a blissful state of relaxation.
As I leaned back, fully content and perhaps a tad overstuffed, I couldn’t help but joke to myself that I shouldn’t be judged for having eaten and finished every last morsel. After all, when the food is this good, who could blame me for indulging?
Every meal was absolutely delicious to be honest, but my ultimate favorites (which i totally recommend for you) were the starters—the Laksa chicken bites with Laksa dip. As for the mains, the Maranggi beef satay stood out. It was divine. The chef mentioned the beef is slow-cooked for two hours, and it certainly paid off in its tenderness and flavor. The dessert was also great. However, I must say and let you know, both mains are quite substantial for one person. I would advise sharing if you decide to order any of them.
There’s more to the menu, a lot more, so you will be spoilt for choice on what to have.
