ThirdFlow: Honouring the legacy, building the future

Today, we officially close Era 1 of the ThirdFlow campaign with a defining and deeply meaningful moment: an interview with the Founder of Capital FM.

There could not have been a more fitting conclusion to the first chapter of our 30th-anniversary journey.

ThirdFlow was created around the theme “30 Years. Three Eras. One Flow.” It is our platform for reflecting on the journey that built Capital FM, celebrating the cultural influence the brand continues to hold, and introducing the future we are now creating.

Symon Bargurei, Managing Director of Capital FM, with Capital FM Founder Lynda Holt as ThirdFlow’s Legacy Flow chapter comes to a close, marking 30 years of Capital FM’s journey/CFM

Era 1—Legacy Flow—has been about remembering where we began, recognising those who carried the vision, and preserving the defining voices, music, programmes and moments that shaped Capital FM.

The Founder’s interview brought this story back to its source. It gave us an opportunity to revisit the original vision: to create a bold, distinctive and modern radio station that would speak to an emerging urban audience in a language, tone and sound that felt fresh, confident and different.

That vision went on to become much more than a radio frequency.

Over the past three decades, Capital FM has become part of the soundtrack of Nairobi and Kenya. It has accompanied audiences through daily commutes, career journeys, relationships, celebrations and moments of national importance. It has introduced new music, elevated talent, shaped conversations and created a trusted space where culture, entertainment, business and public affairs meet.

But the strength of that legacy is not simply measured by how long we have been here. It is measured by the influence we have had, the relationships we have built and our ability to remain relevant as our audiences and the country around us have evolved.

Era 1 has therefore not simply been an exercise in nostalgia. It has been a process of reconnecting with the foundations upon which Capital FM was built: courage, innovation, quality, cultural relevance and an unwavering belief in the power of great content.

Throughout this phase, we have revisited the personalities who defined different moments, the music that raised generations of listeners, the programmes that became part of everyday life and, most importantly, the audiences whose loyalty transformed Capital FM into an enduring cultural institution.

Closing this chapter with the Founder’s voice allowed us to honour both the original ambition and the many people who translated that vision into reality—presenters, journalists, producers, technicians, commercial teams, partners, artists and listeners.

To all those who have contributed to the Capital FM story over the past 30 years: thank you.

Your voices, creativity, commitment and belief helped build the legacy we celebrate today.

But ThirdFlow is not only about looking back.

The strength of a legacy is ultimately measured by what it enables an organisation to build next.

As Era 1 closes, we carry its lessons, values and credibility into the next stages of the campaign.

Era 2—Culture Flow—will celebrate the music, talent, conversations, creators and communities shaping Nairobi today. It will reflect the energy and diversity of the city while deepening our engagement with audiences through radio, digital content, social platforms, partnerships and shared experiences.

Era 3—Future Flow—will introduce the next Capital FM: a content-first, digitally driven media organisation built to meet audiences wherever and however they choose to consume content.

Radio will remain our heartbeat. But video, podcasts, digital products, live experiences, audience insight and responsible technology will expand how our content is discovered, experienced and shared.

Our responsibility is to preserve the trust and distinctiveness built over 30 years while creating meaningful space for new voices, formats, ideas and generations.

The next chapter will require us to earn that trust all over again with new audiences, while remaining true to the qualities that made Capital distinctive in the first place.

Today, we close Era 1 with gratitude and pride.

We honour the vision that started the journey, the people who sustained it and the audiences who made Capital FM part of their lives.

We now move forward with renewed purpose—carrying the confidence of our history, the energy of today’s culture and the ambition to build a stronger, more innovative and more connected Capital FM.

The legacy has been honoured.
The culture is in motion.
The future begins.

30 Years. Three Eras. One Flow.
