The Fourth of July, or Independence Day, has been a federal holiday in the U.S. since 1941, but its roots trace back to the American Revolution. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted for independence, and two days later, the Declaration of Independence, drafted by Thomas Jefferson, was adopted by delegates from the 13 colonies. Since then, July 4th has been celebrated as America’s birth of independence with fireworks, parades, concerts, and family gatherings.
On Saturday, June 8th, 2024, an impressive array of dignitaries, including government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, media, and representatives of various organizations, gathered at the U.S. Ambassador to Kenya H.E. Meg Whitman’s Tate House, Spring Valley for the 246th U.S. Independence Day Celebrations. The celebrations coincided with the 60th Anniversary of the Kenya – US relations.
The lush gardens of the residence were adorned with patriotic decorations, featuring red, white, and blue themes that paid homage to the American flag. The guest of honor was none other than Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Hon. Musalia Mudavadi. His presence underscored the strong and enduring relationship between the United States and Kenya. Other notable dignitaries included former Kenyan Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, Cabinet Secretaries Rebecca Miano and Njuguna Ndung’u, and many others.
In her opening remarks, Ambassador Whitman expressed her gratitude for the warm relationship between the two nations. She highlighted the shared values of democracy, freedom, and mutual respect that have long been the cornerstone of U.S.-Kenya relations. She also hailed Kenya’s continued support for the United States on various fronts such as trade and security.
Hon. Musalia Mudavadi, in his address, echoed the ambassador’s sentiments, emphasizing the deep ties and cooperation between the two countries, US and Kenya. He noted the significant strides made in areas such as trade, security, and cultural exchange, which have greatly benefited both nations. “As we celebrate America’s independence, we also celebrate our collective efforts towards a better, more prosperous future for both our peoples,” Mudavadi remarked.
Kenya and the United States have long been close allies. It’s no surprise that there are frequent high-level visits between the two countries. Recently, H.E. Dr. William Ruto concluded a State Visit to the United States at the invitation of H.E. Joe Biden, President of the United States.
As the afternoon progressed, conversations and laughter filled the air, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. In her closing remarks, Ambassador Whitman thanked all the guests for their presence and their contributions to strengthening the U.S.-Kenya partnership. She reiterated her commitment to continuing the work towards mutual goals and fostering even deeper connections between the two nations.
This year marks 60 years of official U.S.-Kenya partnership, one that is founded on shared values, deep cooperation, and a common vision for the future.
