NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 14 – First-moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) Unilever plans to use 80 per cent locally generated raw materials to drive up domestic production and supply.

In an interview with Capital FM, Unilever Kenya Managing Director (MD) Luck Ochieng said that the firm seeks to promote Kenyan made products through procurement of local raw materials.

“In 2019, we started this journey where we had a split 70 to 30 percent of raw materials being imported and as we speak, we are at 50 to 50 percent and we are looking at a situation where we are only importing 20 percent of raw materials and the rest we get from the local farmers,” he said.

Ochieng added that the firm will cooperate with all parties to achieve the target.

“We are working with farmers to be able to source products locally for example the Royco product is 100 percent locally sourced raw materials,” he added.

“We are also attempting to localize our operations so that we can support regional farmers and communities in the manufacture of the goods we need.”
