NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 28 – A video featuring Senator Bonny Khalwale spearing a bull to death after it killed its caretaker has gone viral on social media, sparking outrage.
The video captures the Kakamega senator fatally spearing the massive bull named Inansio, after which villagers proceeded to butcher the animal whose meat they shared amongst themselves.
One man could be seen walking away with the bull’s blood-dripping head.
Concerns were raised about the treatment of the animal, with one Kenyan stating, “This is not right at all; why kill it mercilessly like that? This goes against animal rights.”
Janet Wambui said even though the bull had killed, “It’s disheartening to see such brutality towards animals. It is disgusting.”
For Brian Mokaya, the bull deserves it, “I understand why Senator Khalwale made that decision. It’s not about cruelty; it’s about tradition. I could have done the same.”
Khalwale explained that he had killed the bull in response to the death of a 46-year-old caretaker who had worked for him for two decades. Khalwale is famous for bullfighting which is common in Western Kenya where he enters them into local competitions.
Kepha Ronoh said, “This video is deeply disturbing. We should always strive to find non-violent solutions to conflicts, even involving animals. We know it killed a human being but that is brutal, they could just have killed it without such violence that is disgusting.”
The Senator, often referred to as the “Bullfighter,” reported to the police that the body of the deceased caretaker was discovered in the cowshed on Sunday.
A police report detailed the investigation: “Police officers from Malaika police station and DCI personnel visited the scene and established that indeed there was a dead body of one Kizito Moi, aged 46 years, who was a caretaker of the fighter bull, namely Inasio, aged 5 years and weighing approximately 520 kgs.”
The deceased exhibited multiple visible injuries on his body, believed to have been inflicted by the aggressive fighter bull.
His body was transported to Kakamega Hospital Mortuary by police, awaiting a postmortem examination.
Senator Khalwale said that his late caretaker had been responsible for caring for his champion bull, Inasio, for over two decades.
“In keeping with our culture, for killing his caretaker, champion bull Inasio meets his end by the force of my spear,” Khalwale said.
