NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 26 – When Safaricom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Peter Ndegwa is not in the office, you will find him in an exotic travel destination.
Being head of Kenya’s most profitable telco, he loves to unwind in white sandy beaches, soak in sun as well as climb mountains.
Travelling allows him to relax while reflecting on his achievements.
Speaking during a breakfast meeting with journalists and influencers in Nairobi, Ndegwa said Watamu is his most preferred travel destination in Kenya.
Watamu is a popular travel destination in Kenya’s coastline in Kilifi County.
Its unspoiled beaches annually attract local and international tourists to experience its beauty.
For nature lovers, being surrounded by lush tropical rainforest as well as protected areas such as Watamu National Park and Arabuko Sokoke National Park is welcomed.
It is also home to the best resorts in the country such as Hemingways, Kobe Suite Resort, among others, with prices per night going for about Sh40,000.
Outside Kenya, Ndegwa likes to travel to Mauritius, an island located on the Indian Ocean.
The country offers a wide variety of activities for tourists from beach, exotic nature and wildlife to resorts.
Ndegwa boasts a stellar career in the private sector having worked with big multinationals in Africa and Europe.
Some of the companies he has worked with include PricewaterhouseCoopers, East African Breweries Limited, Diageo, and now Safaricom.
In 2019, Safaricom appointed Ndegwa as its new CEO, replacing Michael Joseph who was occupying the position on an interim basis after the death of Bob Collymore.
Then, he joined the company from Diageo PLC where he was serving as Managing Director, Continental Europe.
Outside the African sub-continent, his best travel destinations are Czech Republic, Ukraine, Jamaica, Indonesia and Italy.
However, his favorite continent is Asia, which he says is warm.
So far, Ndegwa has visited about 60 countries.
