The exchange is the first major breakthrough following talks held in Istanbul and is part of a phased operation expected to total 2,000 returned prisoners – 1,000 from each side – over three days.
The sides also said that they would present their visions for a potential ceasefire while Russia said it had ‘heard’ Ukraine’s request for a meeting of the countries’ leaders.
