NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 7 – Despite inching closer to a successful defence of their Floodlit Tournament title, Kenya Commercial Bank’s Davis Chenge has admitted they were made to sweat by Kenyatta University Blak Blad during their semi-final tie over the weekend.
The bankers walloped the students 14-3 in a 7p.m. clash at the Impala Grounds but Chenge was quick to give a thumbs up to their opponents for a hotly-contested game.
“We are happy about the win. We did not play as well as we would have wanted to. We were clumsy in the beginning and committed many errors especially in the green zone and this is something that we need to polish. I think it is a new game plan we are trying to execute so there is bound to be these kinds of mistakes. However, I believe if we polish on it, then we will be able to come up with better wins,” the forward said.
Chenge starred for his side to pick up the man of the match award albeit the forward was modest in his comments regarding his performance in the game.
“It is an honour to receive such an award but obviously I have to give props to my teammates because it was a team effort. Kudos goes to the rest of the boys because they did most of the work. It is just that the award can only be given to one person but I believe they are all men of the match,” Chenge said.
KCB, who won the last edition of the Floodies in 2019, have a date against Nondies who upset the previous losing finalists Menengai Oilers 16-11 in another semi-final duel at the same venue.
The two sides will clash on Saturday at Impala Grounds in what will be the curtain raiser for the regular Kenya Cup season, which commences on November 26.
Turning his attention to the season ahead, Chenge said he expects much tougher challenges from their opponents as the standard of rugby keeps improving day by day.
“Fans…I want to thank the fans for their consistent support. To the players, let us continue playing…that is rugby for you. The game is growing and many of our opponents are getting better by the day. That can only be good for the growth of rugby in the country,” he said.
The bankers kick off their Kenya Cup campaign against Kenya Harlequins on the opening weekend.
