5 people die after consuming ethanol-laced alcohol in Kirinyaga

KIRINYAGA, Kenya, Feb 6 –  Five people have died after consuming illicit alcohol in Kirinyaga.

According to vilagers, six others experienced blurred vision following the incident which occurred at a local pub.

They were rushed to the nearest dispensary, where they were treated and discharged.

An extreme case was reported in the dispensary, but it was beyond the doctors at the hospital, and the victim was rushed to Kerugoya General Hospital.

Upon arrival however, the victim passed on.

Kirinyaga Health County Executive George Karoki said the illicit brew contained traces of ethanol, which caused blurred vision and liver cirrhosis.

“The affected victims were given an antidote of ethanol, and we have received reports that the victims have regained their eyesight,” he stated.
