NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 7 – Acting Somali President and Speaker of Parliament Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nuur Madobe will not be vying for the Presidency of his war torn country.
Nuur told the Foreign Affairs Minister Moses Wetangula he was not interested in running his lawless homeland but “will respect the transitional charter and follow its stipulations in electing a new President.”
He met Mr Wetangula in a Nairobi hotel late Tuesday.
“The acting President has assured of his commitment to oversee a smooth election to replace Abdullahi Yusuf,” A statement from the Ministry signed by the Public Affairs and Communication officer David Maina said.
Yusuf who is the president of the Somalia resigned last week ‘for lack of support from the global donor community.’
Meanwhile, Kenya has made it clear it will not send troops to the nation which has not had a solid government for two decades.
“We will not deploy any troops to Somalia but we are willing to contribute in building Somalia,” Mr. Wetangula said.
Kenya will continue training Somali customs officials, immigration officers, army personnel and border guards to help them safeguard their nation.
Somalia is currently under the leadership of a shaky Transitional Federal Government (TFG) which mainly comprises of mistrusting Ministers.
Regional leaders are scheduled to meet in Nairobi next week to draft resolutions which will help restore peace in that nation after Ethiopia recalled its troops.
The United Nations (UN) envoy to Somalia Ahmedou Ould-Abdullah said Tuesday the UN would soon boost its presence in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
In recent weeks, the African Union has repeatedly stated it plans to keep its peacekeeping mission in Somalia but no definite timeline was given.
