NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 21 – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has published election timelines requiring aspirants with the intention to seek elective seats on independent tickets to resign from political parties by May 2.
Under the timelines gazetted on Thursday but which emerged on Friday, the Commission indicated it will publish in the Gazette, the names and symbols of persons intending to contest in the election as independent candidates at least fourteen days before the nomination day being on or before May 13.
“Candidates intending to participate in the August 9 election as independent candidates shall not be members of any registered political party by Monday, May 2 2022 being at least 3 months before the General Election,” the gazette notice read.
Further, candidates intending to participate in the presidential election are expected to deliver to the Commission a list bearing the names, respective signatures, identity cards or passport numbers of at least 2,000 voters registered in each of a majority of the counties (24) on or before May 23.
Nomination of political party candidates and independent candidates for the Presidential Election will be conducted between May 29 and June 6.
“Disputes relating to or arising from nominations shall be determined within ten days of the lodging of the dispute with the Commission. The lodging of the dispute shall not be later than June 9,” the gazette notice read.
IEBC indicated the campaign period for purposes of the August 9 General Election shall commence on May 29 and cease on August 6.
