KISII, Kenya, Dec 19 — A 26-year-old man arrested on Sunday night over an incident where a 3-year-old boy was snatched from playmates before his eyes were gouged out was set to be arraigned in court on Monday.

Maina Ochoki, 26, was identified by the police as the main suspect. He is the first cousin to the victim, Baby Sagini.

Police said the suspect will face attempted murder while the boy’s mother, 24-year-old Maureen Nyaboke, faces child neglect.

Nyaboke is said to have separated with her husband over abuse.

Sagini snatched from his playmates before his eyes were cruelly gouged out. The boy encountered a man with a rod and a torch according to his recollection of moments leading to the torturous ordeal.

He described his attacker, albeit with scanty details, as detectives stepped up efforts to identify the mysterious man as doctors attending to the minor discharged him on Sunday.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations interviewed Sagini’s close family members in the preliminary stages of the probe.

The boy who was said to be playing outside his grandmother’s house was reportedly snatched by the assailant at 6pm.

His grandmother was inside the house while none his parents who had separated were present.
