NAIROBI, Kenya Sep 11 – Capital Group Limited Managing Director Mr Symon Bargurei has lauded the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) for its leadership in promoting media independence and accountability, saying a trusted media sector is indispensable to Kenya’s democracy.
“A trusted media sector is essential for Kenya’s democracy. We commend the Media Council of Kenya for leading this conversation and providing a framework that balances independence with accountability,” he said.
Mr. Bargurei spoke during a courtesy call to MCK Chief Executive Officer Mr. David Omwoyo at the Council’s Nairobi offices. The meeting explored areas of collaboration on media freedom, ethics, and professionalism.
He underscored the need for industry leaders to work with the MCK to promote sustainability and innovation in newsrooms. “The future of journalism hinges on how effectively we adapt to evolving business models while upholding ethical standards. The MCK provides the platform to make this possible,” Bargurei added.
On his part, Mr. Omwoyo emphasised the importance of structured engagement between media and government leaders to strengthen public trust in journalism.
“The Council exists to uphold professionalism and protect the public’s right to accurate, fair, and independent information. To achieve this, we must establish structured platforms where media and government can engage openly while preserving press freedom,” Mr. Omwoyo said.
He proposed regular forums and a media policy task force to review the industry, recommend sustainable funding models, reinforce ethical frameworks, and strengthen self-regulation.
During the meeting, Capital FM reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to upholding high editorial standards and aligning with the Council’s mandate to promote ethical, independent, and responsible journalism in Kenya. The station also expressed willingness to support MCK programmes and participate in national conversations on press freedom and digital transformation.
Both sides hailed the engagement as a significant step toward building stronger partnerships that enhance Kenya’s media landscape and safeguard the values of trustworthy, credible journalism.
