NAIROBI, Kenya Nov 3 – The court has allowed the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to detain two Chinese nationals and three Kenyans for five more days so as to complete investigations into mobile phone fabrication.
Nairobi Magistrate Dolphina Alego ruled that the prosecution had provided compelling reasons to justify the extended detention, citing the necessity for further interrogation and investigation related to serious criminal matters.
The court heard from the prosecution that the two Chinese individuals, Zhou Wenol and Zhou Geofeng, were operating a factory potentially involved in the fabrication of mobile phones. Law enforcement authorities suspect that stolen phones may be undergoing processing within this facility.
It was further revealed that the police had seized various items, including mobile phones, from the factory. The prosecution argued that additional time was required to conduct thorough investigations and determine the precise nature of the operation.
The two Chinese nationals were taken into custody on Monday. Investigating officers stated that they had thus far declined to provide fingerprints and failed to produce valid work permits.
The investigative efforts extend to engaging with several government agencies, including the Kenya Bureau of Standards, Kenya Revenue Authority, and the offices responsible for counterfeit and migration-related matters.
The foreign nationals were apprehended alongside Kenyan citizens Oliver Asava Luvinzu, Kelvin Munyeti and Patrick Mwangi.
