NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 4 – Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha, has emphasised the need to increase Intensive Care Units(ICU) and High Dependency Care Unit(HDU) units in hospitals.
According to the CS, following the Embakasi gas tragedy, the already available units at the Mama Lucy Hospital, and the Kenyatta National Hospital, have been overwhelmed by the large number of victims.
“The ICU and HDU units at these hospitals have been overwhelmed by this incidence and there is an urgent need to increase our ICU and HDU capability,” she stated on X.
The CS further commended the health workers at the hospitals, who have worked tirelessly to attend to the injured victims, and also the ministry of health for offering effective coordination across the hospitals.
“This morning I would like to recognize the teams that have responded to victims of the Embakasi tragedy,” she stated.
“The @WHO responded to this incidence by availing trauma kits to – Mama Lucy Hospital, @kutrrh, and @KNH_hospital. The staff at these facilities have worked tirelessly to attend to the victims,” she added.
The CS has further thanked the emergency services and personnel who responded to the disaster, including the Kenya Red Cross and the St John Ambulance.
Nakhumicha has further expressed her appreciation to the volunteers who donated blood to the health facilities to aid the injured ones further urging members of the public to be vigilant and report facilities that pose risk.
“I call for accountability in this tragedy and urge all members of the public to exercise caution and to report all such facilities that endanger life,” she stated
